Texas Schools Are Showing Improvement – Did Killeen ISD Get an A?

For the first time in three years, the Texas Education Agency has released public school ratings, and for the most part, the news is good.

Despite delays and issues due to COVID-19, the number of schools across the state and in Central Texas that received high accountability ratings increased. Both Lampasas and Lorena ISD received 'A' scores.

Not all schools and districts get rated. Alternative education programs and treatment facilities are not included. According to the Texas Tribune, a total of 8,451 schools were evaluated throughout the state this year. School ratings were as follows:

• A -  27.9%
• B - 46.1%
• C - 19.4%
• Not Rated - 6.7%

Districts also get an overall rating. 1,195 out of the 1,207 school districts in Texas were evaluated, with the following rankings:

• 'A' Districts - 33.1%
• 'B' Districts - 54%
• 'C' Districts - 9.4%
• 'Not Rated' Districts - 3.5%

The TEA’s ratings are determined by scores in three categories: STAAR test scores, improvement in those scores, and the education of disadvantaged students.

TEA Ratings for Killeen, Temple, Belton School Districts

While there were several at the top of the rankings, some Central Texas schools have room for improvement in their scores. Districts and schools that would have rated a 'D' or 'F' were labeled 'Not Rated' for 2022. Before the pandemic, the A-F grading system was used, but now TEA has graded districts on a A-C rating scale for the current scores.

Belton, Salado, and Copperas Cove all received a 'B' rating. Both Killeen and Temple school districts were rated 'C' overall for the school year. Marlin ISD had their highest ranking in ten years, raising their score by 30 points and going from a 'F' to a 'B', according to KWTX.
