Building Resilience: A Killeen Community’s Goal for the School Year
The 2025–2026 school year has officially started here in Texas, and while many parents are overjoyed with excitement, some concerns remain. Of course, the goal this year is to ensure our children have an amazing school year—one filled with confidence, memories, laughter, and, most importantly, a quality education. However, safety is something we must continue to shine a light on.

Building Stronger Kids: Killeen's Community-Wide Resilience Initiative
Following the recent incident at Roy Smith Middle School, I spoke with numerous parents in the community whose children attend schools within the Killeen Independence School District. I asked them directly: What do you think the district and the community need to do to ensure our children's success this year? The responses were simple yet meaningful. Some parents believe it starts with prayer, followed by open communication, and lastly, understanding. With the new no-phone policy now in effect across Killeen-area campuses, many parents are feeling anxious. They want to stay informed and know what’s going on with their children throughout the day. This makes it the responsibility of KISD staff to keep parents in the loop.

Other parents place more responsibility on the community itself. They believe asking children simple, intentional questions after school—like “How was your day?”, “How are you feeling mentally?”, or “Is there anything you want to talk about?”—can go a long way. Parents say that if we follow these three simple steps—prayer, communication, and understanding—this school year can be 100% successful. I have to agree with both perspectives. KISD must maintain open lines of communication with families. We do want to know what’s happening with our children, especially if they ever feel unsafe or distressed. At the same time, parents must also take responsibility by engaging in meaningful conversations with their kids and being present in their lives. This year, the math is simple: if the community stays involved and KISD communicates effectively, everyone will be held accountable. Let’s have an amazing school year!
