In June of the same year, a complaint was filed that stated a 55 year old coworker of Ortiz lost their life following the usage of an IV bag to combat dehydration. Following an autopsy, it was discovered the coworker had a deadly amount of bupivacaine in their system, which resulted in death.
Later in August 2022, an unidentified 18 year old, undergoing a sinus surgery experienced complications during the procedure. When the IV bag was examined further, the drugs bupivacaine, epinephrine, and lidocaine were found. Following this, an investigation began in regards to who could be causing the health issues.
Eventually, video was discovered of Ortiz putting the bags for use in the medical facility, as well as additional evidence. After being found guilty in a trial, his sentence has been revealed.
Dr. Ortiz's Sentence, Reactions From Victim's Families
FOX 4 reports that Ortiz's sentence is 2,280 months. All in total, per FOX 4, it is 190 years. Judge David Godbey, who oversaw the case, stated plainly "He did it."
John Kaspar, who lost his wife due to Ortiz's actions, told FOX 4 that even though Ortiz wasn't in the courtroom for the sentence, the judge handled it perfectly with his words:
"Everything I wanted to hear...It was the conclusion everyone knew. He knew I knew. Now it’s been put on record."
Another individual, Roxanne Bogdan, who lived next to Ortiz for a decade, described her remorse at not being able to halt Ortiz's actions before this all happened:
"He’s escaped the law many times for terrible things...He retaliated against me for testifying against him in court. He was convicted of shooting my dog in retaliation for my testimony. I’m really sad we could not have stopped him earlier."
