Crucial Expansion: Mental Health Officers Grow as Central Texas Calls Spike
As the world continues to change, more Americans—and Texans in particular—are facing mental health challenges. According to data from Community Impact across Central Texas, awareness of mental health issues is growing. Mental health must receive more attention and support, including embedding mental health officers into specialized crisis response teams within police departments. There have been numerous incidents involving law enforcement and individuals experiencing mental health crises that have ended poorly. In my opinion, mental health and law enforcement should have always worked hand-in-hand. Protecting and serving the community includes addressing mental health, and I’m glad steps are finally being taken.

Are More Mental Health Officers the Answer for Central Texas?
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that more than half of adults in Texas with a mental health condition have not received any form of treatment. Although recent legislation has improved access to mental health services, leaders say significant gaps remain . Organizations across Central Texas agree that the primary barriers to care include affordability, a shortage of providers and healthcare workers, insurance issues, lack of nearby treatment locations, and long waitlists. Texas needs to address this now more than ever.
How Central Texas is Reducing Police-Only Mental Health Responses
Setareh Ghaznavi, the Public Relations and Marketing Communications Manager at NAMI Central Texas, stated that Texas consistently ranks near the bottom for mental healthcare access. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, 97% of Texas counties—246 out of 250—are designated as mental health professional shortage areas. That is an extremely alarming statistic. The fact that counties are coming together and recognizing the seriousness of this issue offers hope. By working collaboratively, we can truly make a difference for Texans across the state.
