Why This Killeen Counseling Space Is Being Called a “Safe Haven” for Residents
Mental health is not talked about enough in the Black community. I remember growing up, words like depression, bipolar, or even overwhelmed weren’t really allowed in our vocabulary. It wasn’t unusual for parents in the Black community to say things like, “You’re not depressed, you’re just tired,” or, “If you feel depressed, go wash the dishes—it’ll make you feel better.”

Melissa Ray Is Here To Make Changes In Killeen's Mental Health
Of course, it was often said jokingly, but the reality is that a child might truly have been depressed. As I’ve gotten older, seeing more people in my community recognize the importance of mental health and become open to taking care of it truly warms my heart. Melissa Ray is a Killeen licensed professional counselor who has always been an advocate for individuals—not only encouraging them to protect and talk about their mental health, but also to be educated about it. I’ve had numerous conversations with this astonishing woman, and one thing I can take away from every interaction is that she genuinely believes mental health is real, protecting your peace is mandatory, and talking about it is necessary.
How Would Someone Describe Melissa Ray?
Many women of color carry heavy responsibilities with little space or support to talk about them. While Melissa Ray works with all races and genders, I felt it was important to shine a light on this amazing young woman during Black History Month. When I think of Melissa, the words that come to mind are bravery, strength, and appreciation. She is truly changing the world—one conversation at a time.
