Teachers are very important in the state of Texas.

From watching our children, to making sure they're learning the skills needed to succeed in life, they're an integral part of life. We all have that one teacher we remember that made a difference in our lives. So it's safe to say that we all need teachers in our lives.

But in the Lone Star State, concerns have been growing over the number of teachers that have left the profession. Many are worried due to, according to KVUE, a survey showed a staggering 65% considered outright quitting. But what is causing this increase?

As it turns out, multiple factors are included in the growth in percentage. Here's what KVUE found out when interviewed a teacher in the state.

In an interview with KVUE, Carla Perez stated that one of the major issues with teaching in Texas these days is that the COVID pandemic still is showing effects on the profession:

"There is so much on your plate. It's super hard to get things done...I remember having a lot of fun in the classroom when I first started...It has become a lot more work, and it's gotten harder and harder as the years go by."

Perez also work 11 to 12 hours, and is concerned with the growth of violence in school systems. Ovidia Molina, leader of the Texas State Teachers Association  also echoed this concern:

"It's the way they are being treated....It's the way they are not being made to feel like professionals. It's the way their professionalism continues to be attacked."

Of course, pay is also a worry:

"We have many educators that have to work two and three jobs to stay in education, to be able to pay their bills, to be able to have a family, to try to buy a home, to put supplies in the classroom...In a state where we love to be No. 1 for everything … we are nowhere near No. 1 when it comes to teacher pay. It's a slap in the face."
