Smith—a middle school student—and the stabbing of Serenity Baker, has resurfaced with new findings, according to KXXV. Last spring, Serenity was stabbed on campus. Although the full report has not been released due to confidentiality terms and an ongoing criminal case, the district has released key details. These findings were gathered through interviews with over a dozen KISD employees, several students, and from records of communication and surveillance footage.

It was determined that bullying was not a factor in the incident. No evidence was found indicating that bullying contributed to the event, and no prior reports of bullying had been filed by the student involved. However, officials noted that no students were interviewed at the time . Immediate care was provided to Serenity, with staff rendering aid moments after the incident and remaining with the 14-year-old until emergency responders arrived. Officials emphasized that the child was never left alone during that time.

Superintendent Jo Ann Fey made a statement on Wednesday:
“We’re moving forward with that system, in addition to other systems. I don’t believe there is any assistance we could purchase that would be 100%. I would be lying if I said that. I’m not going to say that on record.”
Fey also stated:
“A couple of things we know to be true are that there were many lapses in communication. Since then, we have taken proactive steps as a system to connect with our external partners.”
The district says it will rely heavily on adult supervision, empowering staff and administration to serve as the eyes and ears on campus to help boost safety for all, ensuring they remain the number one deterrent.
