You've probably noticed that the Lone Star State is getting crowded. Our population has exploded, and recently-released Census numbers show some surprising differences between 2010 and 2020.

Fastest-Growing Cities in America

New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that Georgetown, Texas and Leander, Texas are the two fastest-growing cities in the nation. Between July 2020 through July 2021, Georgetown’s population increased by 10.5%, while Leander saw a population increase of 10.1%.

You can never say that you’re fully prepared, because if you had been planning and building based upon these projected growth numbers three to five years ago, people would have said you were crazy that you would never see growth like this. So it’s always difficult to stay ahead of it. But it really just comes down to infrastructure and making sure that you’ve got the roads, the water, the electric, the wastewater and then the public safety.

Fastest-Declining Cities in Texas

Both Dallas and Houston are in the top 10 fastest-declining cities in terms of raw numbers, according to KXAN. More than 11,000 residents left Houston between July 2020 and July 2021, while the population of Dallas was reduced by over 14,000 people during the same time period.

While it's not getting smaller, Austin did not make the top 15 this year, after being ranked third-fastest-growing three years ago.

Meanwhile, multiple cities in California and the New York metro are losing residents to other areas. San Francisco leads the way, with a population decrease of 6.3% between July 2020 and July 2021.
