Minorities At A Risk of Being Undercounted in 2020 Census

With the 2020 Census less than a year away, minorities may be vulnerable to being undercounted.

The Associated Press reports that a warning about these potential undercounts was released by the Urban Institute on Tuesday. The organization said that anywhere from 900,000 to 4 million people could be overlooked.

The majority of that number would be represented by African Americans, Hispanics, and children younger than the age of five.

States reportedly at the highest risk of potential undercounting are California, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, and Texas.

Some may wonder 'why is this such a big deal?' There are enormous amounts of money and power associated with the 2020 Census. The 2020 Census determines the allocation of over $675 billion in federal spending.

The population count will also determine which states gain or lose U.S. congressional seats. A citizenship question is apparently the cause of concern. The U.S. Supreme Court is current reviewing and weighing its constitutionality.
