Midway Middle School Student Tests Positive for COVID-19

A Midway Middle School 7th grader has tested positive for COVID-19.

According to a report by FOX 44 News, this is the second positive test for a Midway Middle School student, and a staff member has also been confirmed to have the virus.

A transparency letter was sent out by Midway Middle School principal Herb Cox on Wednesday informing parents of the positive test.

So, should parents be worried? Principle Cox explained in the email that there are several things to consider when it comes to being in “close contact” or being “directly exposed,” which include several factors including confirmation of the virus existing, proximity to the virus among other things.

Texas Education Agency says close contact is defined as:

• Being directly exposed to infectious secretions (e.g., being coughed on)

• Being within six feet for a largely uninterrupted or sustained extended contact period throughout the course of a day of approximately 15 minutes. However, additional factors like case/contact masking (i.e., both the infectious individual and the potential close contact have been consistently and properly masked), ventilation, presence of dividers, and case symptomatology may affect this determination.
