Texas summers are something everyone might have to experience once in their lives. You'll feel like you're melting, you'll want to you'll feel a little bit icky if you're outside most of the day.

While most of these concerns are simple, it's also a chance for some to get a tan and be out and about during the sunshine. But for those wanting to get the best tan possible, staying outside long could pose a long term issue to one's personal health.

What could being in the sun for long periods of time cause?

KWTX reports that doctors in Waco have urged caution if people are to be outside for long periods of time. With the UV Index being so high that your skin could be burned in simply ten minutes, it's important that some Texans may need to wear sunscreen to avoid and potential lifelong damage to one's epidermis.

Dr. Greg Walker, when talking to KWTX, suggesting that applying sunscreen no less than SPF 35. He also recommended reapplying every 90 minutes and trying to stay out of the sun between the hours of 10 AM to 4 PM.

What about those seeking a tan?

According to Martin Hatch. Waco dermatologist for Epiphany Dermatology, stronger rays of sun doesn't mean a faster tan. In a comment to KWTX:

“We say there’s no safe tan, so there’s no safe amount of UV exposure," he continued on “Skin cancer typically occurs as a result of sun damage that you’ve accumulated over the course of your life, so it may be many years before that develops. But, you want to protect yourself now so that you’re not developing skin cancer later in life.”

So what do you do in this type of heat?

The best to do is avoid going outside during peak hours of the day. And if you're out for long periods, remember to bring sunscreen!
