The Killeen Native Who Conquered the BET Awards Experience: Svpa Speaks!
June 9 wasn’t just an ordinary day for fans of hip-hop and R&B. According to BET.com, it marked the 25th BET Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. Each year, celebrities come together not only to celebrate their achievements but also to honor excellence in music, sports, movies, entertainment, and television, recognizing Black excellence across all these fields.
This year, Philadelphia native and actor-comedian Kevin Hart hosted the awards, making it a night to remember, especially for Central Texas, which received national recognition.

KILLEEN NATIVE BRINGS HOME AN AWARD
Among those recognized was Jaamal “SVPA” Parker, a two-time gold producer/songwriter and proud Killeen native. When I spoke with the artist, he shared that his musical journey began at Harker Heights High School, later expanding to performances in local clubs like the infamous Hypnotic, once located on the southwest side of the city.
He recalled how he and his team would throw parties in Killeen, where he’d DJ and consistently play his now-hit song and anthem, Halle Berry. Once he handed the track over to a local radio station, he knew there was no turning back.
MR. HALLE BERRY'S WIN IS A FULL CIRCLE
Jaamal took his talents to Prairie View A&M University, where he continued to develop musically. After graduating, everything changed—the Halle Berry track was everywhere. I remember being in my twenties myself and knowing the lyrics word for word.
SVPA explained that the journey wasn’t easy, but it shaped him. He shared that it’s okay to fail—because you only truly lose when you stop trying.
SVPA MAKES HIS CITY PROUD!
The Halle Berry anthem came full circle when recording artist Sexyy Red sampled the beat for her hit Get It Sexyy, which is now played worldwide. Despite the long road, Parker’s story is one of resilience and passion—something that inspires up-and-coming artists and entertainers right here in our city.
When I asked SVPA what message he had for local talent, he said, “Stay focused, stop trying to sound like everybody else, and keep God involved at all times.”
That advice paid off for this rising superstar.
