Will Texas See Any Prisons Close After New Data Reveals Issues?
Crime is sadly a part of life no matter where you live. It's never a good idea to commit a crime, as said person opens themselves up to penalties for their actions. One of the punishments is being sent to jail.
A person could be in jail for a short amount of time, or perhaps even a long time. While in prison, inmates must be watched over to make sure they don't cause problems inside. However, issues have arisen not with the jails themselves, but with the individuals working in them.
As revealed by data collected by Texas Sunset Advisory Commission, there is one way for the state to help itself with these problems. But is it the best idea?

What Is The Proposal Put Forth By The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission?
Per The Texas Tribune, the commission looked back at a report from September of 2024. In that report, data showed that Texas prisons had about 70% of guard positions that were not filled, in addition to the 26% employee turnover rate regarding workers themselves. The data may startle some. But this isn't a new issue, as a video from two years ago reveals:
So what could solve the problem? The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission put forth the idea of shutting down certain prisons in the state. Also, the commission suggested to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice that the department, according the Texas Tribune, “identify root causes of turnover."
At the time of writing, no prisons have been announced to be closed by the TDCJ. As this is a developing story, we will have more information when it becomes available.
