The Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that Hughes was seen waving a firearm out of the window as he entered Cory County on FM 929. As he drove recklessly westbound, his vehicle veered into the eastbound lane, colliding head-on with a 2023 Volkswagen SUV.

Tragically, Hughes was killed upon impact. A 61-year-old passenger in the Volkswagen was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, while a 68-year-old female passenger was taken to the hospital but unfortunately died there. The DPS noted that the crash was still under investigation, and Hughes was the only person in the Chevrolet.
