For months, there was uncertainty and growing concern about what the loss of billions of dollars in healthcare funding could mean for Texas. Those concerns became a reality as hospitals faced the possibility of losing critical Medicaid funding, potentially threatening essential hospital services across the state. Now, Governor Greg Abbott has announced federal approval of $12 billion in critical Medicaid funding for Texas, providing relief not only for hospitals but, more importantly, for the patients who depend on them.
How the $12 Billion Medicaid Win Will Reshape Healthcare Across Texas
The threat of billions of dollars in lost healthcare funding has now been averted, preventing what could have been significant disruptions to Texas' healthcare system and critical hospital services. There were months of desperation and urgent calls for action, especially as Texas hospitals faced the possibility of losing $27 million per day in funding. John Hawkins, president and CEO of the Texas Hospital Association, stated, “We can breathe easier today.”
Hawkins went on to say that the Medicaid crisis hanging over Texas has been averted. We are deeply grateful to Governor Abbott and other state and federal leaders who listened to our concerns, acted with urgency, and worked to protect Texas patients,” Hawkins said. Hawkins says hospitals can now focus on what they do best: saving lives and caring for Texans.
