New York City Gets Its Own Wu-Tang Clan District
The Wu-Tang Clan was honored by New York City with a district named after the crew in their home base of Staten Island.
The ceremony took place on Saturday (May 4) at the intersection of Targee Street and Vanderbilt Avenue, which has officially been renamed Wu-Tang Clan District. Many people were on hand for the unveiling of the street sign and braved through some rainy weather to see the whole thing through.
The nine-man crew of RZA, GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God and Masta Killa definitely made their mark as one of the most heralded groups in rap history releasing seven group albums, dozens of solo projects and catapulting numerous offshoots.
Ghostface Killah was present at the ceremony and offered a speech about the special moment. "It's like a dream right now," he told the crowd. "It's like, yo, 25 years later to come back and to have district, a block named after your crew. It's like, yo, it's unbelievable. First of all, people don't get to make it 25 years later. To come from Staten Island, I wanna tell y'all anything is possible. I never saw this day coming. I knew that we were some ill MCs, but I didn't know it would take it this far."
Next stop Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? The street-sign unveiling ceremony comes less than a week before the release of the Showtime documentary series Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men, which will chronicle the group's rise to fame. There is also another TV series revolving around the group in the works.
