When officials arrived, they found Ayana McClinton, who appeared to be intoxicated, and it seemed that she had decided to take a nap on the ground. At the time, the temperature was below freezing—28°F to be exact. When the authorities approached McClinton, they discovered an alcoholic beverage near her, which confirmed her intoxication. Her children were immediately treated by emergency responders for cold-related injuries at the scene before being transferred to a local hospital.

Though the children were later released to family members after being cleared by medical personnel, McClinton had a previous charge of being intoxicated and assaulting a family member. As soon as the weather dropped below freezing, Houstonians were advised to stay home and stay safe. For this young woman to not only be outside but also to have her children out on the sidewalk could have ended much worse.
