We’ve all seen the protests in California regarding immigration enforcement. That tension has now made its way to Texas, and emotions are running high. According to KWTX, Pedro Lopez, the police chief of Killeen, stated that his officers have been instructed to keep the peace as much as possible. Chief Lopez explained that they will attempt to identify the protest leaders, communicate with them, outline what is and isn’t allowed, and ensure that both planned and unplanned protests proceed as smoothly as possible. He emphasized that they will insist on following this process.

Honestly, you have to commend the police chief for prioritizing peace over pressure. No one wants our community to fall into disorder or chaos, and I believe Chief Pedro Lopez has the potential to manage the situation effectively. Lopez also stated, “You don’t respond to a peaceful protest in full riot gear—helmets, shields, batons, and pepper ball guns. That sends the wrong message and escalates the situation instead of de-escalating it.” I couldn’t agree more.

Chief Lopez has made it clear that he will not allow the KPD to break the law and that officers will remain vigilant for acts of vandalism or street blockages that could hinder emergency services. While no one wants chaos to erupt in our community, if it does, I believe Chief Pedro Lopez is better equipped than most to de-escalate it.
