How Many Drive-In Movie Theatres are Still Operating in Texas?
If you're looking for a fun, retro way to enjoy today's biggest Hollywood blockbusters, go to a drive-in movie theatre. It's an experience you have to try at least once in your life and fortunately, Texas still has a few places you can go.
If your lucky, maybe it'll be a double feature.
Drive-In Movie Theatres
Here's a quick trivia question: During their heyday, there were about 4,000 of these operating across the U.S., but now there are about 320-ish - what are they? If you guessed drive-in movie theatres, you nailed it.
Although mostly a thing of the past, drive-in movies were the way to go back when your parents, or grandparents were young. Basically just a big parking lot where cars would park in rows facing a giant movie screen. Each parking spot had a little speaker you would put on the inside of your window so you could hear the movie. These days you can just turn your radio to a certain frequency to listen. So much better.
As a kid I remember a playground off to the side where all the kids would run around while our parents watched the movie. The concession stand was always the first stop. Load up on popcorn and candy and a soda, Bam! Set for the night.
Drive-In Movie Theatres in Texas
As mentioned above, during its heyday, there were about 4,000 drive-in's across the country, including over 400 here in Texas, the most of any state. That number has certainly decreased over the years and now Texas is home to about 20.
Sometimes you'll see special events that'll feature a pop-up drive-in style movie but the thrill of the actual drive-in experience is harder to find these days. Not impossible, but harder to find.
So depending on where you live, there might be one close to you and if you're really lucky, maybe they'll be showing a double feature.
