Copperas Cove Animal Control and Police are asking residents to be careful and to keep an eye out for their pets after a raccoon was found to have rabies.

According to a press release from CCPD, Animal Control officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of W. Lincoln after a raccoon was killed by a dog. The raccoon was sent to Austin for testing and was found to have been infected with rabies.

Citizens are warned not to approach, touch or have any contact with wild animals, and to keep their pets from having contact with wild animals. Steps should be taken to safeguard their outside areas by covering garbage cans, not leaving pet food outside, etc. -Copperas Cove Police Dept.

Residents are asked to contact Copperas Cove Animal Control or Copperas Cove Police immediately if you believe yourself or a pet has come into contact with any wild animals or if you observe a wild animal acting strangely.
