This is definitely my favorite month in Central TexasIf you think it's because we're celebrating Black History Month, well, you're absolutely right.

ARE YOU CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH? WELL, THIS GUY'S NOT

There have been so many amazing and influential people of color who's acts have inspired people around the globe. It seems like I learn about more of them every February, and it's great to see the celebration of Black culture and contributions grow each year.

Of course, I have realized that there are a lot of people that are not as excited about Black History Month. For instance, Jevon McCormick - an Austin, CEO, author, and keynote speaker who says he is not a fan.

DOES JEVON MCCORMICK HAVE A POINT ABOUT BHM?

When I first heard that Jevon McCormick was not a fan of Black History Month, it truly took me for a whirlwind. Being a man of color, why would you not want to participate?

It was truly disappointing to hear Jevon say he doesn’t celebrate this wonderful holiday. I had to dig deeper to see exactly why.

McCormick explained that businesses capitalize on Black History Month and make sure they use it to their advantage. He says it's become too forced by companies that push it in everyone's face, then forget about it entirely by March 1 as if it never happened.

The more I heard Jevon speak, the more I felt like he could be onto something. I think it’s important that we celebrate Black history, but we can definitely do that throughout the year. For many of us, it’s a central part of our culture and purpose and should be treated as such all our lives.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
