There have been more than 3,500 cases of whooping cough through October, and the numbers have quadrupled compared to the same time last year. There were a total of 1,907 cases last year, according to provisional data, which is truly alarming.

What Are The Symptoms Of Whooping Cough?

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a very contagious bacterial respiratory infection that can cause severe coughing episodes, a runny nose, and a low-grade fever—symptoms similar to a common cold at first. It can also include coughing spells followed by a “whooping” sound as a person gasps for air. This illness is especially dangerous for small infants, who may even stop breathing because of it.

Take The Whooping Cough Infection Seriously

Symptoms can last one to two weeks, with recovery involving a gradual improvement of the cough. Antibiotics, vaccines, and good hygiene are key ways to help prevent and manage the infection. Texans who believe they may have whooping cough are advised to see a physician immediately. Please take this seriously.
