According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA hospitals will be opening soon to civilians battling COVID-19. The move comes on the heels of overwhelmed medical centers and healthcare systems across the country. The ability to have VA hospitals open to civilians means the possibility of 1500 beds to treat those battling the illness.

Along with Louisiana, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, and Massachusetts will be making the medical facilities open to the general public.

“We provide a bridge from the federal government to states and localities during these emergencies,” VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said during a White House coronavirus task force briefing Sunday.

A date for when the space would be made available was not announced.
