I love the holidays and I have a cookbook filled with holiday treats that my friends and neighbors need to know about. I was never a child that was really into hot cocoa. It was just a little too rich for me, but my mother would make the best apple cider recipe that you ever had in your life and I just knew I had to pass this on to you.

This apple cider is so good that I'd even sip it on hot days The crisp apple taste mixed in with the cinnamon sticks was so delicious growing up and it’s still delicious now. Here are the things you will need and the directions to make the best hot apple cider in Central Texas.


1/4 cup real maple syrup

2 cinnamon sticks

6 whole cloves

6 whole allspice berries

1 orange peel, cut into strips

1 lemon peel, cut into strips

Pour apple cider and maple syrup into a large stainless steel saucepan.

Place cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice berries, orange peel, and lemon peel in the center of a square of washed cheesecloth; fold up the sides of the cheesecloth to enclose the bundle, then tie it up with a length of kitchen string. Drop the spice bundle into the cider mixture.

Place the saucepan over moderate heat for 5 to 10 minutes, or until the cider is very hot but not boiling.

Remove the cider from the heat. Discard the spice bundle. Ladle cider into big cups or mugs, adding a fresh cinnamon stick to each serving if desired.
