If you've been needing to get your Texas driver license renewed but haven't had time to stop by a DPS office on a weekday, here's some relief: beginning October 3, you'll be able to do it on a Saturday.

Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Department of Public Safety announced this week that you'll be able to schedule a Saturday appointment at your local DPS office through December 19, with the exception of November 28 (the Saturday after Thanksgiving).

Officers will be open from 8 AM to 5 PM. If, like me, you don't have the option of renewing online this time around and you can't make it on a regular work day, be sure to book an appointment as soon as possible. You can do that here.

When you show up for your appointment, you'll need to undergo a temperature check, and they'll require you wear a mask and practice physical distancing. You should go to your appointment alone if possible, and try to arrive a little early for check-in. (They recommend 30 minutes max.) Be sure to take a card, money order, cashier's check, or personal check to pay any fees. They will not accept cash.

Appointment slots at DPS offices fill quickly, so act fast.

One thing to remember: If your ID or license has an expiration date on or after March 13, 2020, you're currently covered under the State of Disaster declared by Gov. Abbott earlier this year, and you'll have 60 days after it's been lifted and normal operations have resumed to renew.

If you'd like a PDF copy of a letter informing whomever it may concern that you're covered under this grace period, you can download one here.

Whatever you choose to do, just be safe.
