
Central Texas Kids At Risk: Here’s How To Prevent Drownings
Swimming in Central Texas is always fun during the hot days the state goes through every summer. Staying cool is important after all! But there are dangers while one is in the waters.
What Is The Biggest Danger While Swimming In Texas?
One of the worries when one goes swimming in the state of Texas is the potential for drowning. At the time of writing, 22 children have sadly lost their lives while in the water for 2025. In 2024, the number of children lost was a staggering 103.
Recently, efforts have been made to help kids learn how to swim with lessons being lower in payment. However, not everyone knows what to do if someone is potentially drowning. Thankfully, tips are provided by multiple first responders so that you can help somebody who is in danger of drowning.

How Can You Help When Somebody Is Possibly Drowning?
In an interview with KXAN, the captain of Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2, Trevor Stokes, discussed various ways to help in a drowning situation. Speaking about the knowledge of CPR when a child is possibly drowning:
"Obviously, knowing CPR is a good thing, but at that point, something’s already happened. So drowning is silent. It’s deadly, and it happens very quickly...But more importantly, with kiddos, always having somebody who is watching the children, and then rotating that person regularly."
Strokes also stated that "having knowledge of doing CPR and immediately starting that process while someone is calling 911 — it raises the potential for a save so much higher." in regards to assisting. Knowledge of using an AED can also be very helpful.
