The Current State of Central Texas Grocery Stores Before the Storm
As talk of an Arctic winter storm making its way to Central Texas spreads, residents are flat-out panicking. You don’t even have to speak directly to someone who lives in Central Texas to know this is happening. All you have to do is step inside a grocery store and try to grab something simple like eggs or milk. I’ve personally been to three different H-E-B stores in my town, and it has been absolute chaos. Shelves are wiped clean, and many essential items are nowhere to be found.

Why Are Texans Shopping In A Panic?
The reason it’s obvious this isn’t just normal grocery shopping is that entire sections are completely bare. There is literally nothing left on some shelves. Texans are understandably nervous and want to be properly prepared, especially after the devastating winter storm of 2021 that left so many without power, water, and heat. That experience is still fresh in people’s minds. However, the reality is that many shoppers are buying items that aren’t even essential.
Are Texans Overreacting?
In my opinion, there is no reason to walk past shopping carts filled with eight or nine loaves of bread. The winter storm is only expected to last until Tuesday. While it could potentially last longer, I don’t know anyone who would reasonably need nine loaves of bread, sixty pounds of beef, or seven bags of potatoes within a single month. Excessive buying like this only makes it harder for other families to find what they truly need. Only time will tell whether this situation was caused by true panic or simply people trying to be prepared. Either way, for those still trying to shop for their families, finding basic supplies may become scarce.
