Construction continues on Lake Belton High School, and crews experienced a hiccup Thursday when a fire broke out on the existing structure's roof.

Temple Fire and Rescue's Thomas Pechal reports that fire crews were called to the construction site at 9809 FM 2483 shortly after Noon Thursday. When they arrived, the spotted flames and smoke issuing from the roof of the structure. The fire was under control by 12:24 PM, and the scene was cleared by 1:38 PM.

Investigators determined that the fire was unintentional, and started due to roofing material becoming overheated during work earlier in the day.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Ground was broken on the new Lake Belton High School on May 17, 2018. With capacity for approximately 2,500 students, Lake Belton High School is slated for completion in time for the 2020-2021 school year.

Belton ISD’s current high school enrollment is 3,278. By the time the first class graduates from Lake Belton High School in 2023, the District is expected to have approximately 4,500 high school students.

As we reported back in May of last year, the school's mascot will be a bronco. The bronco was the original Belton ISD mascot, so it's in keeping with tradition.
