The Surprising Reason Behind McLennan County’s Falling Overdose Numbers
The City of Waco, Texas, has a lot to be proud of, according to KXXV. It was reported that drug overdoses in the city have declined across McLennan County and somewhat nationwide as well. When local addiction experts were asked about the trend, they explained that increased access to Narcan played a very important role in saving lives.

Can a Single Medication Stop a Crisis? McLennan County Puts Narcan to the Test
Over the last three years, overdose deaths have dropped by at least 27%. During that same period, Narcan—also known as naloxone—became available nationwide over the counter without a prescription. This medication is designed to reverse an opioid overdose quickly and generally does not cause effects in someone who has not taken opioids. However, in individuals with physical dependence on opioids, it can trigger sudden and severe withdrawal symptoms because it rapidly removes opioids from receptors in the brain.
Waco and McLennan County See a Hopeful Dip in Overdose Deaths
Drug overdoses have been the leading cause of death among people between the ages of 18 and 45 in the country, with a large portion of those deaths linked to fentanyl. The CDC reported that in McLennan County alone, there was an average of two to three overdoses per month, which is extremely alarming.
The CDC also stated that although the decline in deaths is encouraging, it does not mean the crisis is over. Officials have urged community members to stay informed, consider carrying Narcan if they choose, and seek help if needed.
