Lauryn Hill Electrifies Audience at ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards, Timbaland, Jay Z Honored
The vivacious singer, who was a Golden Note honoree, transformed the Beverly Wilshire Hotel into her personal playground. She electrified the entire room by delving deep into her catalog and performing tracks like "Everything is Everything," "Ex-Factor" and Lost Ones." Prior to setting the stage ablaze, Hill ruminated on her success as an artist, when she received her Golden Note award.
“Being creative has to do with having space,” she said regarding her illustrious career. “I’ve always had family first and a support team to help me clear the road.”
Jay Z and Timbaland shared the Songwriter of the Year award and both won four songwriting trophies apiece, including "Drunk in Love," "Part Two (on the Run)" and "Tom Ford." In addition, "Drunk in Love," alongside Kid Ink's "Show Me" and Bart Millard's "I Can Only Imagine," were named top songs of the year. With Hov not in attendance, Timbaland walked on stage and praised a slew of artists, including K. Michelle and Jeremih.
"You can sing your ass off," Timbo said in regarding to K. Michelle's vocal abilities. He followed that up by paying homage to Jeremih, as well. “You’re a bad dude who can write your ass off," he said.
He also managed to squeeze in some love for Missy Elliott by shocking fans and revealing that she would be returning with new music in July. "We’ve got to join together. All the young artists need to work together, not against each other, and make magic," Timbo concluded.
In addition to Jay Z, Timbaland and Lauryn Hill owning the night, Jasmine Sullivan and Migos performed, as well.
