Killeen, Texas on List of ‘Geekiest’ Cities in America: Do You Agree?
Did you know July 13th was 'Embrace Your Geekness Day'?
Killeen, Texas showed up on a new list from Lawnlove.com, a lawn care and equipment site. 200 of the largest cities in the United States were ranked on their 'geekness', which was determined by four different factors:
- Collectibles Access (total comic book, video game and board game stores)
- Costume Access (number of costume/cosplay stores)
- Community (number of 'geek meetup groups')
- Events (number of comic-cons, Renaissance fests, or similar gatherings)
What Does the Word 'Geek' Mean?
Merriam-Webster gives three different definitions for the word 'geek': 1) a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked; 2) an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity computer geek; 3) a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake.
I think for the purposes of this list, we can probably go with definition number two!
Geekiest City in America
It's not really surprising that the 'geekiest' city in the country is New York City in New York. The Big Apple came in at the top of the list nationwide for the amount of collectible stores, costume shops, and community events in the area.
Geekiest Cities in Texas
Out of 200 cities in the nation, three in the Lone Star State made the top 10 geekiest places. Coming in at 9th on the list was Austin, Texas. Houston was ranked 6th, and the geekiest city in Texas is San Antonio, with a score of 35.81 out of 100.
Killeen came in at 108th overall on the list, beating out several other Texas cities including Corpus Christi (#110), Denton (#127), and Frisco (#164). The worst place for a geek to live in Texas would be McKinney, which came in at 186th out of 200 cities in America.
Time to geek out, Central Texas! Embrace your inner enthusiast. Just don't bite the heads off any chickens, please.
