Killeen Boil Order Lifted for All Properties

Thank goodness! The citywide boil order that's been in place in Killeen since February 17 has been lifted.

UPDATE 2-27-21 7:23PM: The City of Killeen  lifted the boil order for properties located at 408 to 906 Oak Hill Drive and 700 to 716 Spring Branch Drive. A water line break has occurred in the area, and water service needed to be interrupted as crews worked to make repairs. The order was lifted Saturday evening.

In a news release issued at 10:34 PM Wednesday, City of Killeen Executive Director of Communications Hilary J. Shine announced that the order was lifted for all properties across Killeen, including its schools.

"Extreme weather conditions caused a loss of water pressure and service throughout the city, which necessitated the city-wide boil order," Shine wrote. "Service has been restored, and all water quality tests have been completed. The water is now safe to drink and use without boiling."

Test results from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality came back clean, so those with water service have one less thing to worry about.

It's been a wild ride for Central Texas towns since early last week, when heavy snow, ice, and prolonged sub-freezing temperatures wreaked havoc on city water systems and caused countless pipe ruptures and leaks. As temperatures began to rise, leaks, mostly on private property, were depleting water the City of Killeen was receiving from Bell County WCID#1.

Out in Copperas Cove, the boil order still affecting the Mountain Top Pressure Plane was lifted earlier this week.

Harker Heights, however, will likely remain under a boil water order through Saturday as City workers continue the process of carefully sanitizing tanks, then sending off samples for TCEQ testing. Both the cleaning process and the testing process can take as long as 24 hours.
