It was news we were hoping not to hear but expected nonetheless.

According to KHOU, the Houston Medical Examiner has confirmed that the remains of missing 4 year old Maleah Davis have been found in Arkansas.

Late last week on Friday, the girl's "stepfather" Derion Vance told Houston activist Quanell X where authorities would find Maleah's body and admitted to dumping her on the side of the road, but he claimed her death was an accident.

The defendant remains charged with tampering with a corpse. Prosecutors continue their review and are working with Houston Police. Additional charges would be filed as the evidence supports doing so. We remain focused on finding the truth and delivering justice for Maleah." - statement from Harris County District Attorney's Office via KHOU

Vance initially claimed that Maleah was kidnapped on May 3rd in Houston which lead to an Amber Alert and month long search. His story was quickly picked apart by investigators and he became a person of interest before being arrested on evidence tampering charges.

The child's remains were left in a plastic bag that was run over by mowers. Medical examiners in Harris County are testing what little was left intact but they believe that it will be nearly impossible to be able to determine her cause of death.

What a sad and heartbreaking development in this tragic story.
