Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department are teaming up to host a free trout fishing event this weekend at Carl Levin Park.

TPWD will be releasing trout the Carl Levin Park pond on Thursday, January 14, and the Trout Fishing Weekend will run through Sunday, January 17.

The are no divisions for this event, but participants are encouraged to send photos of whatever the catch to Harker Heights Parks & Rec Athletic Coordinator William Ross at wross@harkerheights.gov to be entered to win prizes.

Ross asks that participants practical physical distancing and wear masks when in close proximity to people who aren't members of their immediate household so that the event can be safe for everyone.

Participants will need to adhere to all Texas Parks and Wildlife license requirements, which can be found here. Kids 17 and under may fish without a license, and there are a few other exceptions as well. TPWD uses funds from licenses purchased to protect the places we fish and hunt, so obtaining a license does a little good for Texas.

Ross wrote in an email Tuesday that he hopes "participants will get out and wet a line and enjoy a good time in the nice weather! We are very lucky that our pond at Carl Levin Park is a designated release site for the TPWD trout program, where over 500 Rainbow Trout will be released into our pond. They are beautiful fish and great table fare as well."

Some of my favorite memories are of fishing with family and friends as a kid. Those are the times that really stick with a child, so if you can get out and enjoy this fishing day with your family, I highly recommend you do. It's a great opportunity to bond and have a great time with the people you love.
