Sad, shocking and heartbreaking news from over the past weekend as a former University of Texas Longhorn great is no longer with us.

According to reports, Benson and an unidentified woman in her 30s were on a motorcycle heading down FM 2222 when a minivan pulled out of Mount Bonnell Road and hit them. Both Benson and the woman were declared dead on the scene. Police said speed and poor visibility were the biggest factors in the crash.

Benson was a four-year starter for the Texas Longhorns and received the Doak Walker Award as the country's top running back in 2004. In the 2005 NFL Draft, Benson was drafted fourth overall by the Chicago Bears. In 2008, Benson went on to play for the Cincinnati Bengals, where he stayed until 2012 when he signed with the Green Bay Packers.

Benson was also beloved in the Austin community, helping run a foundation called NUFCED – Nurturing Underprivileged Families Cultivating Educational Development.

Many former UT football and NFL stars shared their sadness over Benson's passing over the weekend on social media. We send our heartfelt condolences to The Benson family, his friends and many fans.
