We spend a lot of time and money on our vehicles, so it's understandable that you might want your license plate to stand out among all the random letters and numbers out there.

You have to admit, you do notice a personalized license plate when you see one.

License Plate Rules in Texas

Since 1965, we've been able to personalize our license plates in Texas. People even buy vintage number plates from auctions and pay a premium for them. However, there are limits to what we can put on those plates, due to state law. If you request a plate with the following, there's a good chance it will be denied:

  • Foreign words
  • Slang words or phrases
  • Acronyms
  • Reverse spellings
  • Spellings that may be considered objectionable or misleading

If the plate you choose gets rejected, you can try something else, get a refund for the cost of a personalized plate, or appeal. It usually takes about five days to do an application review.

Banned Texas License Plates

What's too rude for the road? Sometimes, the rejections are a bit puzzling. Last year, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles rejected more than 6,700 personalized license plate requests.

For instance, the numbers '6' and '9' can't be used together, unless they are used in combination with the vehicle make, as in '69 CHEV'.

Some Examples of Denied Plates

According to an open records request by KVUE, here are a few of the denied personal plate applications during 2021:

Seems like these were pretty tame. Maybe 'STUDMFN' was too misleading.

Bet You Didn't Know: 10 Bizarre Texas Laws Still on the Books

Many states still have strange laws on the books that aren’t enforced or taken seriously anymore, and Texas is no exception.

Most of these laws are just funny now, but at one time, there was a valid (or at least somewhat valid) reason for them to exist.

Texas has plenty of strange rules and regulations that you could technically be prosecuted for if you violate them, since they've never been amended. Some of these are only for specific cities and not state-wide, but all of them are pretty odd!

Let's take a look at 10 of the weirdest ones in the Lone Star State.

Hook ‘Em! 7 Celebrity Graduates From University of Texas at Austin

When you think of the University of Texas at Austin, what comes to your mind first? Is it celebrities? Of course, some celebrities are more vocal than others about their alma mater. Matthew McConaughey lets everyone know where he came from, so no surprises there. The actor is also a Professor of Practice at the university's Moody College of Communication, and graduated in 1993 with a Radio/TV/Film degree from UTA.

Aside from McConaughey, you might be surprised at some of the famous people who picked up a degree in the Lone Star State's capital city.
