UPDATE: Firefighters report that flames spread to a third home and multiple vehicles. Thankfully, no injuries were reported and the homes were not occupied. Unfortunately, 8 people were displaced. They are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

The fire appears to have started in a garage. The first units were dispatched to the scene at 1:50 PM. The fire was under control by 4:30 PM thanks to the efforts of firefighters from Belton, Salado, Troy, Morgan's Point, and the Central Bell County and Southwest Bell County Fire Departments.

The fire remained under investigation late Saturday and the cause had not yet been determined.

If you saw plumes of dark smoke on the horizon Saturday afternoon, chances you were turned toward Belton. Alex Gibbs with our partners at News 10 reported that firefighters responded to multiple fires there.

Two homes were aflame just off Sherwood Boulevard and Cedar Drive, and crews were doing all they could to stop the flames from spreading to a third nearby house. Multiple fire and other first responder departments were at the scene. No injuries had been reported as of the time this article was drafted, but there wasn't yet enough information from the scene to say with certainty that no one was hurt. We sincerely hope everyone in the houses made it out safety, and that our firefighters are able to do their job without harm.

As mentioned above, smoke from the fires could be seen for miles. One of our employees reported seeing the smoke from as far as Killeen.

We'll bring you more information as it becomes available. In the meantime, please avoid the area, or if you have to drive that way please take it slow and give the firefighters, paramedics, police, and other emergency responders plenty of room to work.
