Emergency SNAP Benefits have been extended for the month of June.

According to KWTX, Governor Abbott announced this week that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is providing up to $280 million in SNAP benefits this month in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With SNAP providing food assistance to about 1.6 million low income households or individuals, Texas residents have received more than $3.4 billion in benefits since April of 2020.

The increase of SNAP benefits for the month will allow households to receive at least $95 in emergency allotments, and even better news is that recipients will receive a 15% increase in total benefits monthly until September.

While Texans are starting to get back to work after the pandemic resulted in many losing jobs, there are still plenty of folks who need food assistance until they're fully back on their feet. Hopefully these continued benefits are helpful.

The news comes after it was announced last month that Gov. Abbott wrote a letter to the U.S. Department of Labor stating Texas' intention of opting out of any further COVID-19-related federal unemployment benefits as of June 26. More information on that story can be found here.
