The Central Texas area is still feeling after effects of the dangerous flooding that occurred back in July of 2025. One of the biggest populations affected was none other than pets in the state. But, animal shelters helped out make sure displaced pets were safe.

The Flooding In Central Texas And Animal Shelters

According to KXAN, a large amount of animals were taken to shelters in Central Texas. In total, according to the news organization, 2,000 animals lost in the floods were taken shelters so that their owners could possibly find them. Per Dr. Ellen Jefferson, Austin Pets Alive! CEO and President:

“When they’ve lost everything, people need their pets. They need them to be there. They need to know that they’re safe."

But, capacity at shelters is limited, and other animals needed to be moved so that lost animals could be brought in. This has lead to another revelation, animal adoptions need to rise so that shelters aren't stressed to take in more animals.

How Can Residents In Central Texas Help Prevent Future Issues?

The biggest way one can help is of course, adopting a pet from a shelter. Rolando Fernandez, interim chief animal services officer at Austin Animal Center said that one day, he'd like to see a moment like this:

“What I would love to see is: we have all animals, you know, adopted or fostered, and my staff can take at least one good breath of respite for that day — knowing that we’re probably gonna have more animals come in the next day.”

So, remember to adopt and not shop Texas! The perfect pet may be waiting for you in a Central Texas animal shelter.
