America’s Oldest Veteran Richard Overton Honored In Austin
America's oldest known veteran who lives in nearby in Austin is getting ready to celebrate his 111th birthday and The Department of Veterans Affairs are celebrating the life and story of this great man!
Today (April 7th), The VA dedicated The Richard Overton Healing Garden in front of The Austin VA Outpatient Clinic as part of a series of celebrations for his upcoming birthday on May 11th. The World War II veteran served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater. He achieved the rank of Corporal in the 1887th Engineer Aviation Battalion.
Mr. Overton has met former President Barack Obama, former Vice-President Joe Biden, former Texas Governor Rick Perry, comedian and host Steve Harvey, and was featured in Cigar Aficionado magazine as “America’s Oldest Cigar Smoker.”
