The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating after a World War II-era plane crashed into the parking lot of a Fredericksburg apartment complex Saturday afternoon.

KVUE reports the aircraft went down around 3:15 PM at the Friendship Place Apartments, 709 S. Creek Street. Both occupants of the craft, one of whom was reportedly a veteran, were killed. The airplane was a total loss, and damaged several vehicles upon impact.

A witness told KXAN she knew something was wrong when the P-51 Mustang began tipping too far to its right. She said there was silence just before impact, as if the craft had no engine.

It's unclear why the plane was flying in that area, though the Pacific War Museum was hosting an event honoring World War II veterans. The museum initially Tweeted that two veterans were killed in the crash, but later corrected their report and said only one person aboard the vehicle was a veteran.
