Recently, a new bill was passed in the Texas Senate known as SB 2972. The bill was not without pushback. So much so, that it has led to a lawsuit from students at the University of Texas.

What Does SB 2972 Do For The University Of Texas?

The details of the bill are multiple, but the main detail causing the lawsuit deals with the University of Texas, and it's affiliate schools, banning "“any speech or expressive conduct protected by the First Amendment." This ban was enacted on Monday, September 1st, 2025. The time the ban is active is from 10 PM to 8 AM on the the grounds of any University, per KXAN.

But, the ban also includes another facet that goes into effect during the last two weeks of semesters. Items such persons invited to speak, percussion instruments, and things that make sound louder are not allowed during that time period.

Students at the University aren't ok with this new rule however, and have made their stance known quickly.

Students At The University Of Texas Are Suing

In a statement to KXAN, Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression Senior Supervising Attorney, JT Morris said the following:

“The First Amendment doesn’t set when the sun goes down...University students have expressive freedom whether it’s midnight or midday, and Texas can’t just legislate those constitutional protections out of existence.”

Since the lawsuit is in its early stages, things are a bit unclear as to how it will all proceed. But, the University of Texas is aware of the legal action:

“The UT System has not reviewed the lawsuit yet, and because it is a matter of litigation, we are not able to offer additional comment at this time," as they said to KXAN.

As this is a developing story, we will have more information when it becomes available.
