Happy New Year’s Texas. Well, maybe in a couple of days. As everyone gets prepared to start their New Year’s resolutions, achieve goals, and make promises that they can’t keep most Texans are also in the kitchen to secure the bag for 2024. There are a lot of superstitious myths that Texans are aware of and live by, but one myth is taken seriously it is not even considered a myth it’s considered tradition.

Everybody wants to be rich and here in the great state of Texas we feel like we have the system to become just that, and all it takes is a little bit of food. That’s right here in Texas on New Year’s Day there is a particular meal prepared for Texans to have wealth and prosperity for all of that year and it’s very simple. In the south collard greens are more of a condiment than a side dish. I say condiment because you don’t make a meal without collard greens.

Collard greens are usually cooked with smoked pork meat like ham hock, or neck bone or sometimes you can find it paired with smoked turkey meat. This particular dish is a representation of the dollars that you will receive for the rest of that particular year. Another dish that is made to perfection is black-eyed peas, which symbolize the coins you deserve and the prosperity that will happen to you going into the new year. Last but not least grapes are also a dish that’s needed to make sure that you’re cup runneth over for the rest of the year. But with grapes, you have to be literally at midnight. Texans get under a table in the house and eat grapes for prosperity Joy, and big bucks for the year. Now to someone who is not from Texas, this might seem somewhat unnecessary, but for us Texans, it’s tradition so if you don’t wanna be broke as a joke, all 2024, you better gather up your essentials and have a great year.
