Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has released a statement urging Texans to remain alert and cautious of unfamiliar seed packages appearing in mailboxes across the state. According to KHOU 11, since February of last year, more than 1,000 unsolicited seed packages from 109 different locations have been collected by the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Officials emphasized that while some of these overseas packages may appear harmless, they pose serious risks to Texas crops and the state’s ecosystem. Commissioner Miller stated, “At a glance, this might seem like a small problem, but this is serious business.” He added that the potential introduction of invasive species through these seeds presents real risks to Texas families and the agricultural industry.
Check Your Mailbox: Why Texas Officials Are Warning Against These Unsolicited Packages
Authorities are asking residents to report any suspicious seed packages immediately so the contents can be properly collected and disposed of. The issue was first identified in February when an unmarked package from China containing unidentified seeds and a liquid substance was discovered. Following that incident, the Texas Department of Agriculture issued urgent warnings advising Texans not to handle or plant seeds from unknown sources.
Officials stress that this matter should be taken very seriously and urge the public to report any similar packages as soon as they arrive.
