The Texas Rangers are investigating after an armed standoff in Temple ended with gunfire Saturday night.

Officer Shawana Neely issued a statement about the incident early Sunday morning. According to Neely, Temple officers responded to reports of shots fired at a home in the 600 block of South 7th Street at approximately 9:30 PM. When officers arrived, they discovered that they'd been given the incorrect address and began driving the area in search of anyone suspicious.

A witness reportedly stopped the officers and directed them to a man they said fired the weapon. When officers attempted to speak to the man the witness indicated, the man refused to stop and began firing on the officers. The officers returned fire.

According to Neely's report, the gunman fled to a home in the 700 block of S. 15th St., forced his way inside, and barricaded himself along with the homeowner. Police established a perimeter and called a SWAT team and negotiation unit.

Neely said the homeowner was able to escape through a window, leaving the suspect inside the home alone. When attempts by the negotiation unit to establish contact with the suspect failed, SWAT deployed what Neely called "less than lethal projectiles" into the home, but the suspect still did not respond.

After several hours passed without contact with the suspect, SWAT officers entered the home and found the man in the attic. Shots were exchanged, and the suspect suffered a gunshot wound. He was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Texas Rangers are now investigating the case. According to Neely, the name of the suspect and further details are currently being withheld in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.
