Will Buying Soda With SNAP Benefits In Texas Be Prohibited Soon?
Many in Texas use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, otherwise known as SNAP. But not all items are available to one using them. Could another item be put on that list with a new proposed bill?
Is There Another Item That's About To Be Disallowed From Purchase Via SNAP?
Per WFAA, a new possible bill was brought forth known as FIZZ-NO, which it's abbreviation stands for Funding is Zero for Zero Nutrition Options. It's goal is "to improve public health and reduce taxpayer costs" which was stated by Representative Keith Self. Self also said the following, according to WFAA:
“Allowing taxpayer dollars to subsidize sugary sodas, which offer zero nutritional value and contribute to costly health conditions, is counterproductive. The FIZZ-NO Act is a common-sense solution to strengthen public health and reduce the financial burden on taxpayers.”

What Is The Reasoning For FIZZ-NO?
Data reported by WFAA from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that at the time of writing, the percentage of adults regarded as obese is 40, while it's 19% for children. As reported by Self's office, drinking beverage considered sugary leads to increase possibilities of various health problems.
If the bill were to become a law, it would also take effect within 180 days. However, there is indeed opposition for the bill.
Who Is Against This Proposed Bill?
WFAA reports that the American Beverage Association are not in favor of it. A part of their statement to the news organization said the following:
"...Limiting choice by restricting SNAP purchases won’t make Americans healthier or save taxpayers money. Rather, these proposals would effectively create a two-tiered system in which the right to personal autonomy around diet is conditioned on income and means...The fact is that soda is not driving obesity in America. While adult obesity is up 37.4% since 2000, beverage calories per serving are down 42%."
As this is a developing story, we will have more information when it becomes available.
