If you've got an aspiring young firefighter at home looking for something fun to do this summer, sign them up for Temple Fire & Rescue's free Junior Fire Cadet Program.

Boys and girls ages 9 to 13 will train with real equipment as they learn about handling ladders, fire hoses, and nozzles, as well as fire prevention, traffic safety, CPR, and first aid. They'll even learn about using ropes and tying knots.

The junior fire cadet training will not only prepare them for a future in firefighting, but will impart to them the importance of ethics, setting goals, working as a team, hygiene, exercise, and respect for neighbors and themselves.

Kids can attend one of two 10-day sessions.

Session 1 is scheduled for June 3 to 14. Session 2 will be held from June 17 to 28.

Both sessions will take place at Meridith-Dunbar Early Childhood Academy at 1717 East Avenue J and the Fire Training Center at 7268 Airport Road.

There's a limit of 65 kids per session, so you'll want to act fast. Extra applicants will be placed on a waiting list and notified if a spot opens up.
