9th Annual Juneteenth Celebration Heads to the E Center In Killeen
Even though Juneteenth did not become a federal holiday until 2021, the state of Texas has long recognized and celebrated its significance. While slavery had legally ended before June 19, 1865, that was the day when the news finally reached Texas, and enslaved people learned they were free. Because of that, Juneteenth remains a deeply important part of Texas history and culture.

Why Is Juneteeth So Important In Texas?
Here in the City of Killeen, we celebrate Juneteenth every year because everyone must understand the meaning behind this historic day. Why is it so important? Why do we continue to celebrate it and pass its story on to future generations? The answer is simple: history matters. When we fail to acknowledge history, it can be forgotten, distorted, or erased. That is something we cannot allow. Preserving and sharing the stories of those who came before us helps ensure that future generations understand both the struggles and the triumphs that shaped our nation.
