A Lamb Worth a Million: How a Texas Teen Rewrote the Houston Rodeo Record Books
A young Texan’s hard work pays off big time at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Record-Breaking $1 Million Lamb Highlights Houston Rodeo Auction
In a historic moment that shocked the crowd at NRG Arena, a single market lamb from the small town of Seagraves, Texas, became the most valuable animal in the history of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (RODEOHOUSTON). On Friday, March 13, 2026, the Grand Champion Market Lamb shattered all previous records, selling for a staggering $1 million.
Working Seven Days a Week Pays Off
The record-setting lamb was shown by 13-year-old Reagan Miller, a member of Denver City FFA. The big win didn’t come easy. Like many other kids who show livestock, raising the lamb was a fulltime job that included weekends.
The Memory Behind the One Million Dollars
According to KCEN, the historic $1 million bid was placed by the Hildebrand family, long-standing pillars of the Rodeo community. The one million dollars purchase was made in memory of Brittany Ann Hildebrand, a devoted supporter of the Houston Rodeo’s mission. Houston businessman Jeffery Hildebrand saw the money as an investment in Texas’ future. Hildebrand said these are the kids who are going to save America.
A Record Breaking Rodeo
The lamb auction wasn't the only event that set a new record. Paizlee Akins of Whitesboro, Texas, showed the Grand Champion Market Goat, which sold for a Rodeo-record $450,000.
Reserve Grand Champion Record
The records continued with the Reserve Grand Champions. Raider McPhaul of Big Lake raised the Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb, which brought in $310,000. The Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat, raised by Briggs Bowers, sold for $250,000.
Investing in the Next Generation
Under HLSR rules, the young exhibitors receive a guaranteed premium, while the remaining hundreds of thousands of dollars are funneled into the Houston Rodeo’s educational fund. In 2026 alone, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is expected to contribute more than $30 million to scholarships and educational programs for young Texans.
