Is HBO Max Worth It? Melz On The MIC Checks It Out
If you are in need of a much deserved distraction from all the current events and want to be entertained, streaming services are stepping up to the plate to provide you with a LARGE selection of stuff to watch online. The latest streaming service to appear on the scene is HBO Max, which boasts a HUGE library of content.
But all that content comes with what I believe to be a STEEP price tag of $15 a month, which is about the cost of Netflix's "Premium" streaming plan. So I decided to take it for a test drive and see what it has to offer.
As you've probably seen elsewhere, HBO Max boasts a huge library of content - over 1000 movies according to some, but there's LOTS of classic TV shows on there including all 4 seasons of the Adult Swim series "The Boondocks" which I'm currently enjoying.
While we're on the topic of TV shows, you can also catch watch all 6 seasons of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, all 10 seasons of Friends, and HBO series including "The Sopranos" and "Insecure". Tons of classic comedy specials from HBO are featured as well, including classics half-hour specials from Dave Chappelle and other superstar comedians like Chris Rock.
Now we get to the drawbacks.
The movie collection is kinda of weak to me. While there is also an sizable library of blockbuster movies including classic films on "TCM", the movies on this app seem lacking. There are lots of sequels to franchises missing. Oh, and why are there only TWO seasons of Russell Simmons "Def Comedy Jam"? The two WACKEST seasons at that. What about those early classic Def Jam shows from the 90s?
I'm sure as time passes, they will correct these mistakes and add more and better content, but outside of "The Boondocks", "The Fresh Prince" and a few select movies and shows, HBO Max may not be worth the $15 price tag each month, at least not now in the early going.
We'll check back in a few months and see what happens. Do you have HBO Max and if so, what are you watching on there?
